THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20th, 2020 - I learned this week that life in “The Beach” was a little different in the beginning. The 100 steps at the foot of Fallingbrook were built to allow people to reach the Dance Pavillion that was right on the beach. In the early days – 1890’s – the Toronto Railway installed streetcar tracks along Queen to Balsam for summer use only. People who lived in the Beach and worked downtown, on dark winter mornings had to walk to Woodbine to catch a streetcar and they carried lanterns, which they left in a shack at Woodbine & Queen and on their return trip would pick up their lantern for the walk home…..

MISSION CAPSULES: Samsam, a mother of five, lives in a community in Somalia where access to food is a consistent struggle and many people are malnourished. Samsam jumped at the opportunity to join a PWS&D supported program to learn about nutrition for infants and young children. Through this program, she discovered a simple trick for determining whether a child or mother is malnourished; taking a measurement near the top of their arm. Now, by helping community members screen for malnutrition, Samsam is making sure that people in her village are receiving the care that they need. This program demonstrates the multiplying effect of enabling communities to help themselves. With 1,540 people trained on how to measure malnutrition in this way, over 15,000 children and 5,000 women have been screened so far.

UPDATE ON THE ARRIVAL OF HASSAN AND HIS FAMILY - we have just learned that they will be arriving in 4 – 6 weeks time and we will be given ten days notice. Since last Tid Bits we have been promised two sets of dishes; a set of cutlery; a set of pots & pans and a set of cooking knives.

We still need double bed sheets, pillow cases, tea towels, a kettle, a futon mattress, beds and a dining room table. Keep in mind we have no storage facilities. However, if you could let Peter McKinnon or myself know if you can provide any of these items it would be appreciated. When we did our inventory we found single bed sheets and several sets of towels that have been stored for all this time and will need to be laundered.

Have a good week - MB
