MISSION CAPSULES: The crisis in Syria has resulted in one of the largest refugee movements in modern times. PWS&D is responding with Canadian Foodgrains Bank to ensure people like Latif Anaoun are able to feed their families. Before the conflict, Latif owned a cosmetics shop, but when the fighting came too close, he fled Syria for Lebanon. The food vouchers he receives allow him to save money on food so he can pay his portion of rent on the tiny apartment he shares with his six year old son and 18 other people. Latif hopes that one day his son can enjoy peace - like he did before the war. "When the bombings stop we will go back" he says. In addition to providing humanitarian assistance, The Presbyterian Church in Canada is able to help sponsor Syrian refugees to resettle in Canada.

NOTE: Last Saturday people came together from several churches in our Presbytery for a morning of information sharing at Leaside Presbyterian Church. The main speaker Rev. John Peter Smit from Synod, spoke about what alternatives there are to be considered for today's churches. Very interesting discussions happened and gave us lots to think about.

Last Sunday, at our congregational meeting, we were joined by Rev. Wes Denyer our Interim Moderator and Rev. Alex Bissett. Rev. Bissett has a two point charge and was able to share what that experience is like. He gave us some good information and answered a lot of questions. Again, the meeting gave us a lot to think about.

In September, Rev. John Peter Smit will be visiting Beaches to assist us in planning our future.

NOTE: Beach United Church on Wineva is offering a Friday morning exercise class for seniors. The age group is 60 to over 80. Classes include balance work, strength and stretching. info 416-691-8082

What is Love!

A group of 4 to 8 year olds were asked "What does love mean?" The answers were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined.

- "Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your french fries without making them give you any of theirs" Chrissy - age 6

- "When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different, you just know that your name is safe in their mouth"! Billy - age 4

- "When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore...so my grandfather does it for her even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love" Rebecca - age 8

- "Love is what makes you smile when you're tired" Terri - ae 4

- "Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him to make sure the taste is OK" Danny - age 7
