MISSION CAPSULES: Residents of boarding homes are often marginalized, neglected and overlooked by society. Toronto's Boarding Homes Ministry helps congregations form teams that visit residents of boarding homes. Annemiek Miller, a member of Rosedale Church's team, shares, "In ten years of visiting we have been blessed with deep and meaningful community. Residents are talented at warmly welcoming us, in thinking creatively, in making us both laugh and cry. Interactions are genuine, and rarely wrapped in social conventions. Waves of humility, gratitude, joy, laughter, silence, frustration, irritation and aggression, ebb and flow in our midst. Life's joys and challenges seem magnified in this boarding home." Your gifts to Presbyterians Sharing ... are helping to nurture this loving, healing community ministry.

A Journey with Friends by Mary Rae Shantz.

Music is an important part of community life in the boarding home we visit. It unites us, and lets us share in a non-threatening, welcoming way. Music is especially fun at our annual BBQ. One of the residents was a quiet man who did not regularly join our meetings, but always stayed for the music at the BBQ. A couple of weeks ago, he went missing from the home and later his body was found.

How could we be a healing force in the midst of this type of pain? On that day music opened up a venue for the men to share their fears, and their tears. The music soothed the community. We sang old favourite hymns, peaceful hymns, and between the hymns the men shared memories of our friend.

Our last song was "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands". We closed with a verse using everyone's name, and at the end we included the name of our dear friend. Then a resident led us in prayer and invited us to join in.

It was a difficult evening, but it was an important meeting for everyone in our ministry. It demonstrated how much desire there is to be in community, to share our pain, our laughter, our tears, and our music, as together we share this journey on earth.

ON ANOTHER NOTE: We need two, three or four people to volunteer to weed the Avion garden. The weeds are very healthy but need to come out, they are forcing the good plants to struggle AND they are hiding the dop poop!. Call the office ...we have bags, but no tools.

PARAPROSDOKIANS are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected and frequently humorous.

- Where there's a will, I want to be in it!

- The last thing I want to do is hurt you, but it's still on my list.

- If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong!

- Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak!

- We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

Have a good week - MB
